Two E-mails from Ed Wells

A true fishing testimonial from a HAPPY BarHopp'R client. Read about Ed Well's experience with Capt. Butch Rickey, one of the top native Florida fishing guides, backcountry fishing and flats fishing in the waters of Pine Island Sound around Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Pine Island, and occassionally, Sarasota Bay.

Hi, Butchie, a.k.a. Capt. Crunch!

Just read your report and was reminded to send you my mailing address for copies of the pictures you took of our catch. I'm glad you have those shots because the film I just developed of our trip did not include a single fish! The address is 44 Cochran Road, Richmond, VT. 05477. We have had fun reminiscing of our trip with you and the boys have some nice memories.

The comments by other parties you have taken out were quite accurate - you do work incredibly hard for you client. Our outing was a tough one because the fish were not cooperating, making your job all the tougher. That didn't slow you down at all. It was great day in spite of the slow fishing and we were more than ready to head into shore when the time came.

Again, best wishes for a remedy to your wife's medical problems and have a good summer.

Ed Wells

Hi Butchie

A little feedback for you about the trip since you noticed the nick name our crew gave you seems to have stuck! Well, I appreciate the seriousness with which you go about trying to catch fish and understand the need to watch out for expensive gear, maintain order and safety on the boat. Even though we did ,overall, have a very good time, as I described, I think we all kind of felt that at some point in the day it became too much like work and not enough like fun. (Having to really work for the fish added to this, I'm sure)

A thought for you to consider Butchie would be to check the barometer of the crew after awhile to see if your efforts to catch fish are compatible with where the crew is at. At some point in the day I must admit to being a bit intimidated by the instructions you were giving. I found the technique you were teach ing difficult to grasp as it was new to me. We are not new to catching fish so I think this made it all the more frustrating and a bit bruising on the ego! Adding to all of this was fishing with two children. Even though they were the good sports I thought they would be I think (as you pointed out) the trip was not really designed for kids but maybe could or should have been. I guess we all learned something here.

Well, they say getting honest feedback is difficult to get but I felt like I owed you an explanation for the Capt. Crunch label. Rest assured it is given with affection. I'd like to end by saying that if given the chance I would welcome an opportunity to hook with you again and would gladly recommend you to my friends.

Best Regards,

Ed Wells
