Dear Cap'n Butch,
Thanks a million for the best guided trip I've ever had!
I asked for an instructional trip and that's sure what you provided, covering the fine points from finding bait, to chumming bait, to proper cast net throwing, to fishing the tides, weather, site selection by species and season. Not to mention techniques for approaching the fishing spot, anchoring, chumming the fish and departure techniques! Wow! What a lot ofinfo to absorb!
And did I mention the fishing itself? Though I told you that the actual fishing was secondary in importance to me than being able to pick your brain and expertise on our instructional trip, the fishing was superb (even though you thought it was a bit slow)! Thanks for guiding me to my first "west coast slam" ever! I think the final score was 1 trout, 1 snook and 13 reds in the boat. It would have been about twice the number of reds had I caught on sooner to your "only hook set a tight line" rule. I'm sure that, had I just been after the fishing rather than your teaching, we would have spent more time fishing and less time showing me the places and fishing considerations, and that the fish count would have been even higher. But I believe I learned more from you from a day on the water than I would have learned in years on my own.
I have also learned that there are tight lines, and TIGHT LINES! I must admit that from reading your web site, I could not understand how so many people were such fishing dummies that they would try to hook set a slack line. Now I know that it's a matter of understanding what truly constitutes a "tight line" when fishing 200 feet of monofilament!
I must admit to a bit of consternation when I first witnessed you bringing out your chum launching plastic bat! I was thinking to myself, "Holy shit! This guy is SERIOUS about enforcing his instructional technique!" I was glad to discover it was a chumming aid, and not a disciplinary tool!
The lunch at the Waterfront restaurant and the BS session on the dock after the fishing was done capped off what was to me a perfect day spent with a true professional and a helluva nice guy to boot! I'm saving up for the next trip! In the meantime, maybe we can get together some evening after work to share fish stories over some white sippin' likker of indeterminant origin!
